75 Years of the Refugee Convention… Protection Begins with Partnership

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, CAFA Development Organization – North Kordofan Office participated in organizing a consultation meeting on strengthening legal frameworks and policies that support refugees, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Commission for Refugees (COR). The event brought together government institutions, judicial and law enforcement authorities, humanitarian organizations, and representatives of refugees from South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The consultation served as a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange on the refugee situation in North Kordofan State. Participants discussed key challenges related to protection, access to essential services, registration and documentation, education, healthcare, food security, mental health and psychosocial support, and livelihood opportunities.

The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination among government institutions and humanitarian partners, improving response mechanisms to safeguard refugees’ rights, enhance the quality of services, and promote social cohesion between refugees and host communities.

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed on several key recommendations, including:

🔹 Strengthening registration, documentation, and data management systems.
🔹 Enhancing coordination among government institutions and humanitarian partners.
🔹 Expanding protection programmes and access to essential services.
🔹 Supporting healthcare, education, food security, and mental health and psychosocial support.
🔹 Strengthening the resilience of refugees and host communities.

CAFA Development Organization believes that protecting refugees is a shared responsibility, and that building strong partnerships while listening to the voices of affected communities is the foundation for a more effective and sustainable humanitarian response.
