On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, CAFA Development Organization – North Kordofan Office participated in a consultation meeting on strengthening legal frameworks and policies that support refugees. The event was organized in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Commission for Refugees (COR).

The meeting brought together representatives from government institutions, judicial and law enforcement authorities, humanitarian organizations, and refugee communities from South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Strengthening Refugee Protection

The consultation provided a platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing on the refugee situation in North Kordofan State. Participants discussed key challenges related to refugee protection, access to essential services, registration and documentation, education, healthcare, food security, mental health and psychosocial support, and livelihood opportunities.

Promoting Coordination and Better Services

In addition, participants emphasized the importance of stronger coordination between government institutions and humanitarian partners. They also highlighted the need to improve response mechanisms that protect refugees’ rights, enhance the quality of services, and strengthen social cohesion between refugees and host communities.

Key Recommendations

At the end of the meeting, participants agreed on several recommendations:

• Strengthen registration, documentation, and data management systems.

• Improve coordination among government institutions and humanitarian partners.

• Expand protection programmes and improve access to essential services.

• Support healthcare, education, food security, and mental health and psychosocial support.

• Strengthen the resilience of refugees and host communities.
